LANGUAGE ARTS

Language arts includes reading, writing, language, and spelling.

         Reading:  Reading will involve using novels or short chapter books within our grade level and practice with skills to prepare for TEKS/TAKS testing.

Writing:  Possible modes of writing could include:
                       How-to, Compare/Contrast, Poetry, Research and Narrative.  Sometimes, we will write using the Thinking Cap from our Sponge,
creative writing on a wide variety of topics, and many types of poetry to be maintained in a poetry folder. 

              L
anguage:  Daily Oral Language will be used with two sentences each morning and a quiz weekly with four of the sentences  covered for the week.  Sponge is a daily homework  activity covering a variety of language elements.  Mountain Language is a weekly activity started each Monday and completed by  Friday.  It is mounted on the wall in the classroom.
 
              S
pelling:  A pretest is given each Monday, ABC order is the  homework assignment Monday night, daily class assignments using the words in context, and a test  each Friday.

Concepts covered in 3rd grade are mastering basic facts in
addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  We also

cover customary and metric measurement, fractions, mixed

numbers, estimation, problem solving, and practice in a

format to prepare for TEKS/TAKS testing.  Target Practice

will be completed over a period of time.  This must be done in the classroom since this is
mounted on the classroom wall. No grade will ever be taken on this activity.  It is presented in a TEKS/TAKS format.  Daily activities will include
Moose Math which
is a variety of concepts in a short TEKS/TAKS format.  Grades will be taken on this activity routinely.

       SOCIAL STUDIES

Concepts covered will include map skills, U. S. government,
North American Indians, continents, countries, states,

 capitals, and celebrations around the world.  We will do a

 research paper in this class.


SIX WEEKS INFORMATION

    Each six weeks when report cards are sent home, the third grade team will notify the students and parents about
 the theme for the Super Citizens Celebration.

Students are invited to attend the Super Citizens Celebration on the
Friday afternoon that report cards go out from 2:30-3:15.  Students are invited according to behavior during the six weeks.

COMPUTERS/LIBRARY/ART

    All students go for library check out each week and go to the computer lab once each week for
language arts and math.  Students are given 45

minutes in language arts and 30 minutes in math. All students go to art

four times each six weeks.

Reading Programs

Texas Readers
Books must be at least 40 pages to be counted and considered third grade level.  Awards at the end of the year could include a certificate for 400 pages, a certificate with a silver star for 1000 pages, a certificate with a gold star for 2500 pages, and a certificate with a gold seal for 4000 pages.

Texas Bluebonnet Books
Most of the 20 books on this list, which is changed each year, will be read aloud in class to the third graders during homeroom.  The students are allowed to vote on their favorite if they have read or heard five books on the list.
